Adnams Environmental Superheroes

Environmental Action Group

The Adnams Environmental group has representatives from across the business and is constantly looking at ways to reduce our impact on the environment. Recent examples include:

  • Replacing standard light bulbs with low energy versions within Adnams hotels
  • Introducing a policy to maximise tire usage on HGVs by swapping them over to increase longevity
  • Ordering biodegradable plastic bags for the Wine Cellar & Kitchen stores.
  • Formulating an internal education campaign to encourage changing behaviour to reduce carbon emissions
  • Review the environmental policy
  • Reviewed our waste supplier to one who separates and recycles 95% of waste, rather than putting to landfill.

Bikes for Adnams Employees
The Distribution Centre is about a mile out from the metropolis of Southwold. So we have bought a few bikes for employees to use rather than their cars.

Adnams eco-superheroes
Working in such an inspirational building has made us a bit competitive and we’re all trying to ‘out green’ each other! We even have Environmental Superhero kits with our very own code of conduct.

Light bulbs as Christmas tree decorations
Having switched to energy-efficient light bulbs wherever we could in our hotels, we were left with an enormous pile of old bulbs. Rather than throw them away, we asked a local school to help us out and they turned them in to Christmas Tree decorations for us.

Environmental Standards
To monitor and evaluate the work we are undertaking we are working with a consultant to prepare us for the ISO14001 environmental standard. Alongside this the Carbon Trust has conducted and audit and we are working closely with the University of East Anglia’s CRed team. This involves making a commitment to reducing our carbon emissions and we have an Environmental Science placement student with us for a year to explore ways to make these reductions.

We work closely with Suffolk Coast and Heaths and the Marine Conservation Society and Suffolk Greenest County.
